What Does It Look Like?
The blackspotted puffer is a small fish, growing up to about 33 cm (about 1 ft) long. Its body is round and a bit long, like a stretched-out ball. Unlike many fish, its skin does not have scales.
This pufferfish does not have pelvic fins (the pair of fins usually found on the belly). It also lacks a lateral line, which is a special sensory organ most fish use to feel vibrations in the water. Its dorsal fin (on its back) and anal fin (on its belly) are small and are located near its tail.
The pufferfish has a short snout with two pairs of nostrils. Its mouth is at the very front of its head and has four strong teeth.
The color of the blackspotted puffer can be quite different from one fish to another. They can be grey, light brown, blue, or even bright yellow or orange-yellow! Sometimes, they can even be two colors, like blue and yellow. You'll often see dark colors around their eyes and mouth. Their skin is also covered with dark spots that come in many sizes and shapes.
Where Does It Live?
This fish lives in warm, tropical waters. You can find it across the Indian Ocean and stretching all the way to the central islands of the Pacific Ocean. This large area is often called the Indo-Pacific. However, you won't find it in the Red Sea.
Blackspotted puffers like to live near coral reefs. They are often found close to the outer edges of reefs and in calm lagoons. They usually stay in shallow waters, from the surface down to about 25 m (about 82 ft) deep.
What Does It Eat?
The blackspotted puffer eats many different things that live on the seafloor. It enjoys small sea creatures like sponges, algae (seaweed), and even the tips of some corals, like Acropora. They also munch on crustaceans (like crabs and shrimp) and mollusks (like snails and clams).
How Does It Behave?
This pufferfish is active during the day, which means it is diurnal. It usually lives alone and likes to have its own space. This means it is territorial, defending its home area from other fish.
Is It Dangerous?
Yes, the blackspotted puffer has a very strong poison called tetrodotoxin. This poison is deadly and helps protect the fish from predators that might try to eat it.
When a pufferfish feels threatened, it has a special way to scare off enemies. It can quickly swallow a lot of air or water to make its body inflate, turning into a big, round ball! This makes it look much larger and harder for predators to eat.
