Arpin is a small town located in Wood County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2020, about 942 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a rich history connected to the early days of land surveying in Wisconsin.

History of Arpin

Early Land Surveying

Back in 1851, a team of surveyors working for the U.S. government carefully measured the land that would later become the town of Arpin. They used tools like a Gunter's chain and a compass to mark the corners of each section of land. This helped to create maps and divide the land properly.

What Surveyors Found

The surveyors wrote down what they saw in the area. They described the soil as mostly dark and rich, which is great for farming. The land was generally flat, but some parts in the southwest were hilly and had blue flint stones.

They also noted the types of trees growing there. In the southwest, they found sugar maples, ironwood, and butternut trees. The eastern and northern parts had lots of Birch, Oak, pine, and soft maple trees.

Wildlife and Early Settlers

The surveyors also saw signs of beaver dams near the streams, which sometimes caused the low-lying areas to flood. They mentioned that the streams would rise and fall quickly.

At that time, there were no permanent settlements in Arpin. The only buildings they found were a few small, rough log cabins. These cabins were used by shingle makers during the winter. Even then, the surveyors believed the land was valuable and would be popular if it were available for sale.

Geography of Arpin

Arpin covers a total area of about 85.5 square kilometers (about 33 square miles). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the town's official boundaries.
