History of Charleville-Mézières Arrondissement
The Ardennes department was created in 1800. The Charleville-Mézières arrondissement was part of it from the very beginning. For a while, it was sometimes called Charleville and sometimes Mézières. This changed in 1966. That year, the two towns of Charleville and Mézières joined together. They formed one larger town called Charleville-Mézières.
Geography and Neighbors
The Charleville-Mézières arrondissement is located in a key spot. To its northwest and north, it shares a border with the Namur province in Belgium. To the northeast, it borders the Luxembourg province, also in Belgium.
To the east, you'll find the Sedan arrondissement. The Vouziers arrondissement is to the southeast. To the southwest, it borders the Rethel arrondissement. Finally, to the west, it touches the Aisne department.
