The arrondissement of Chinon is like a smaller administrative area or district in France. It's part of the Indre-et-Loire department, which is a bit like a county. It's located in the Centre-Val de Loire region, which is a larger area. The main town and capital of this arrondissement is Chinon.

History

When the Indre-et-Loire department was first created in 1800, the Chinon arrondissement was already a part of it.

Geography

The Chinon arrondissement is the most western part of the Indre-et-Loire department. It shares borders with other areas. To the north and east, it's next to the Tours arrondissement. To the southeast, it borders the Loches arrondissement. On its western side, it touches the Vienne department. To the northwest, it borders the Maine-et-Loire department.

Even though it's the smallest arrondissement in the department by land size, covering about 1,694.2 square kilometers (654.2 square miles), it's the second largest in terms of how many people live there. In 2014, about 86,952 people called it home.

Composition

Cantons

In France, cantons are like smaller voting districts. After a change in how cantons are organized, they don't always fit perfectly inside one arrondissement. This means a canton might include towns from different arrondissements.

The main cantons that are part of the Chinon arrondissement are:

  • Chinon
  • Langeais (partly)
  • Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine
