History
When the Indre-et-Loire department was first created in 1800, the Chinon arrondissement was already a part of it.
Geography
The Chinon arrondissement is the most western part of the Indre-et-Loire department. It shares borders with other areas. To the north and east, it's next to the Tours arrondissement. To the southeast, it borders the Loches arrondissement. On its western side, it touches the Vienne department. To the northwest, it borders the Maine-et-Loire department.
Even though it's the smallest arrondissement in the department by land size, covering about 1,694.2 square kilometers (654.2 square miles), it's the second largest in terms of how many people live there. In 2014, about 86,952 people called it home.
