History of Le Puy-en-Velay Arrondissement
When the Haute-Loire department was first created on March 4, 1790, this area was known as the arrondissement of Le Puy. Later, in 1988, its name was officially changed to Le Puy-en-Velay.

The arrondissement of Le Puy-en-Velay is located in the middle of the Haute-Loire department. It shares borders with several other areas. To the north, it's next to the Puy-de-Dôme and Loire departments. To the northeast, it borders the arrondissement of Yssingeaux.
To the east and southeast, it's next to the Ardèche department. To the south and southwest, it borders the Lozère department. To the west, it's next to the arrondissement of Brioude.
This arrondissement is the largest in the department. It covers an area of about 1,930.7 square kilometers (745.4 square miles). It also has the most people, with 96,041 inhabitants recorded in 2014. This means about 50 people live in each square kilometer.
