History of Lozère
Lozère was created in 1790. This happened during the French Revolution. At that time, France was divided into departments. These new departments replaced the older provinces. Lozère was formed from a part of the old province called Languedoc.
Two other names were suggested for this department: Les Sources and Hautes-Cèvennes. However, these names were not chosen.
Geography of Lozère
Lozère covers an area of about 5,167 square kilometers (1,995 square miles). It is surrounded by five other departments. These departments belong to two different regions:
- Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region
- Occitanie region
The Lozère department has four main natural regions. Each region covers a different mountain range:
- The Aubrac is a plateau in the northwest. It is between 1,000 and 1,450 meters (3,280-4,760 feet) high. The climate here is cold and wet. The highest point is Signal de Mailhebiau at 1,469 meters (4,820 feet).
- The Margeride is in the northeast. These mountains are made of granite and have many forests. The climate is cold, but drier than in Aubrac. The highest point is Signal de Randon at 1,551 meters (5,089 feet).
- The Causses are a group of very dry limestone plateaus. They are located in the southwest of the department.
- The Cévennes are in the southeast. They are part of the Massif Central mountains. The highest point in the department is here, Mont Lozère, at 1,702 meters (5,584 feet).
Three important rivers begin in Lozère:
- The Tarn river starts on Mont Lozère.
- The Lot river also starts on Mont Lozère.
- The Allier river starts in the Margeride mountain region.
Administration and Government
The department of Lozère is managed by the Departmental Council of Lozère. This council is based in Mende, which is the main city. Lozère is part of the Occitanie region.
