History of Pamiers Arrondissement
The Arrondissement of Pamiers was first created on February 17, 1800. It was part of the Ariège department from the start. However, this district was removed in 1926. Later, in 1942, Pamiers became an arrondissement again.
Geography of Pamiers
The Arrondissement of Pamiers is the northernmost district in the Ariège department. It shares borders with the Haute-Garonne department to its west and north. To the east, it borders the Aude department. To the south, it is next to the Arrondissement of Foix. The Saint-Girons district is to its southwest.
This arrondissement is the smallest in the Ariège department. It covers an area of 1,315 square kilometers (about 508 square miles). Even though it's small, it has the most people. In 2014, about 73,702 people lived there. This means it has a population density of about 56.0 people per square kilometer.
