Asad Umar (Urdu: اسد عمر; born 8 September 1961) is a well-known Pakistani politician and former business leader. He served as a government minister, helping manage Pakistan's money and plans for the future. Before becoming a politician, he was the boss (CEO) of a big company called Engro. He joined politics in 2012.

Early Life and Education
Asad Umar was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in 1961. He grew up in a family with a military background. His father, Ghulam Umar, was a high-ranking army officer. Asad is the youngest of six brothers and one sister. His family later moved to Karachi.
Asad studied commerce at the Government College of Commerce & Economics. He then earned a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from IBA Karachi in 1984.
Business Career
After finishing his studies, Asad Umar worked for HSBC Pakistan for a short time. In 1985, he joined Exxon Chemical Pakistan as a business analyst. He even worked for Exxon in Canada for a while.
In 1997, he became the first CEO of Engro Polymer & Chemicals. This company was part of the larger Engro group.
Leading Engro Corporation
In 2004, Asad became the president and CEO of Engro Corporation. He helped the company grow and think globally. Engro even hired a famous US consulting firm to plan its future.
Under his leadership, Engro expanded its business. They bought a food company in the US and started growing their fertilizer business in North Africa.
In 2009, Asad Umar received a special award called Sitara-i-Imtiaz for his public service. He left Engro in 2012 to start a career in politics. Many people saw him as one of the most successful business leaders in Pakistan.
Political Career
Asad Umar joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party in 2012. He quickly became a Senior Vice President in the party.
Member of the National Assembly
In August 2013, he was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan. This is like being a member of parliament. He won a special election in Islamabad-I.
Government Minister Roles
In the 2018 Pakistani general election, Asad Umar was re-elected to the National Assembly from NA-54 (Islamabad-III). After the elections, he became a member of important committees in the National Assembly. He even chaired the Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs.
On 20 August 2018, he became the Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs Minister of Pakistan. In this role, he was in charge of the country's money matters. He presented the government's budget plan for 2018-2019. He also met with the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss financial help for Pakistan. He later stepped down from this role in April 2019.
After leaving the Finance Ministry, he continued to work as the Chairman of the Standing Committee for Finance, Revenue, and Economic Affairs. This role allowed him to advise the finance minister. He also joined the Economic Advisory Council.
In November 2019, Asad Umar was appointed as the Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms, and Special Initiatives. This meant he helped plan big projects for Pakistan's future. He also chaired the committee for the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan, he was appointed as the Chairman of the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC). This group was very important in managing Pakistan's response to the pandemic.
Party Leadership and Retirement
On 25 December 2021, Asad Umar was appointed as the Secretary-General of the PTI party. This was a key leadership role within the party.
In May 2023, he announced his resignation from his party positions. Later in November 2023, he shared that he was leaving politics completely.
