Ash Mountain is a tall mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It is the highest peak in the Tuya Range. This special mountain is a type of volcano called a "tuya." It is found near High Tuya Lake and Tuya Mountains Provincial Park. Ash Mountain is one of six tuyas grouped together near Tuya Lake.
Discovering Ash Mountain
Ash Mountain is located in northcentral British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Stikine Ranges and the Cassiar Mountains. The mountain stands at 2,125 meters (about 6,972 feet) above sea level.
What is a Tuya?
A tuya is a unique type of volcano. It forms when hot lava erupts under a thick glacier or a large lake. When the hot lava meets ice or water, it cools very quickly. This fast cooling creates special rock formations. Ash Mountain is a great example of a tuya.
How Ash Mountain Formed
Scientists believe Ash Mountain formed a long time ago during the Pleistocene Ice Age. This was a time when much of the Earth was covered in ice. The bottom part of Ash Mountain is made of pillow lava and hyaloclastite. Pillow lava looks like stacked pillows and forms when lava cools underwater. Hyaloclastite is a type of volcanic rock made of broken, glass-like pieces. These rocks show that the volcano erupted under ice or a big lake.
The mountain itself is made of loose rock pieces. It also has strong, wall-like structures called dykes. These dykes are made of basaltic rock. Basalt is a common, dark volcanic rock. The dykes pushed their way into the volcano's main body.
Neighbors of Ash Mountain
Ash Mountain is not alone. It is one of several tuyas in the area. Other tuyas nearby include Tuya Butte, South Tuya, and Mathews Tuya. Most of the other tuyas in this group do not have official names.
