Ashikaga Yoshihisa (足利 義尚, December 11, 1465 – April 26, 1489) was the 9th shōgun (military leader) of the Ashikaga shogunate in Japan. He was in charge from 1473 to 1489 during the Muromachi period. Yoshihisa was the son of the eighth shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, and his wife, Hino Tomiko.
Before Yoshihisa was born, his father, Yoshimasa, didn't have a child to take over as shōgun. So, in 1464, Yoshimasa adopted his younger brother, Ashikaga Yoshimi, to be his successor. However, Yoshihisa was born the very next year! This caused a big argument over who would become the next shōgun. This argument led to a huge war called the Ōnin War, which started in 1467. This war also marked the beginning of the Sengoku period, a time of many battles in Japanese history. In the middle of this war, Yoshimasa decided to step down in 1473. He gave his important job as Sei-i Taishōgun (the full title for shōgun) to his young son, Yoshihisa.

What Yoshihisa Did as Shogun
Yoshihisa officially started leading the government in 1479. During his time as shōgun, a big uprising happened in 1488. This event was called the Kaga Rebellion, and it took place in Kaga Province.
The next year, Yoshihisa was leading his army in a fight against a powerful lord named Sasaki Takayori. Sadly, Yoshihisa died unexpectedly during this military campaign in 1489. He did not have any children to take his place. After his death, his father, Yoshimasa, briefly took back control of the government. However, Yoshimasa also passed away the following year.
After the Ōnin War, a powerful lord named Rokkaku Takayori took over land and estates that belonged to nobles, temples, and shrines in southern Ōmi Province. In 1487, Yoshihisa led a military mission called Rokkaku Tobatsu to stop Takayori. But as mentioned, Yoshihisa died during this campaign. His cousin, Ashikaga Yoshitane, became the tenth shōgun the next year.
