Ashikaga Yoshitane (足利 義稙, September 9, 1466 – May 23, 1523) was an important leader in Japan's history. He was the tenth shōgun (military ruler) of the Ashikaga shogunate. He held this powerful position twice during the Muromachi period. His first time as shōgun was from 1490 to 1493. He then ruled again from 1508 to 1521.
Yoshitane was the son of Ashikaga Yoshimi. His grandfather was Ashikaga Yoshinori, who was the sixth shōgun. Yoshitane was first known as Yoshiki. He changed his name to Yoshitane in 1501. This happened when he was living away from the capital.
The ninth shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshihisa, died in 1489. He had no children to take his place. So, Yoshitane became the new shōgun a year later. The shōgun was also called the Sei-i Taishōgun.

Yoshitane's first time as shōgun
Yoshitane became shōgun in 1490. This was a time of many changes in Japan. In 1491, a powerful leader named Hōjō Sōun took control of Izu Province. This showed how power was shifting.
In 1493, Yoshitane faced a big challenge. A warlord named Hatakeyama Yoshitoyo forced him to step down. Yoshitane lost a power struggle against Hosokawa Masamoto. He was replaced by Ashikaga Yoshizumi, who became the eleventh shōgun.
Yoshitane's return to power
In 1500, Emperor Go-Kashiwabara became the new emperor. Later, in 1508, a powerful lord named Ōuchi Yoshioki helped Yoshitane. Yoshioki helped Yoshitane get his position back from Yoshizumi. So, Yoshitane became Sei-i Taishōgun again.
In 1520, there was another problem. This was about who would take over from Hosokawa Takakuni. Takakuni became the Kanrei, which was like the shōgun's main helper. Yoshitane did not agree with Takakuni. Because of this, Yoshitane was forced out of power again.
In 1521, Emperor Go-Kashiwabara named Ashikaga Yoshiharu as the new shōgun. Takakuni had arranged for Yoshiharu to replace Yoshitane.
After this, Yoshitane had to leave the capital. He went to Awaji Island. He later died in Awa province, on the island of Shikoku, in 1523.
