A Look Back at Ashwaubenon's History
Long ago, in the 1850s and 1860s, the U.S. military bought most of the land on the west side of Green Bay from the Sioux people. However, the area that later became Ashwaubenon was different. This land belonged to two daughters of Chief Ashwaubamy, a Sioux chief. They started selling their land to local farmers and landowners in the late 1800s. One of these early owners was Jacques Vieau.
What's in a Name? The Origin of Ashwaubenon
The name Ashwaubenon has a couple of interesting theories about where it came from. One idea is that it comes from the Ojibwe language. It might mean "place where they watch" or "keep a lookout." Another theory suggests the name comes directly from Chief Ashwaubamay himself. In the Menominee language, which is similar to Ojibwe, the place is called Es-Wāpanoh, meaning "thither see the dawning."
