The ashy bulbul (scientific name: Hemixos flavala) is a type of songbird. It belongs to the bulbul family, called Pycnonotidae. You can find these birds in parts of Asia, like the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They love living in warm, wet forests, especially in lowlands or on mountains.

About the Ashy Bulbul

The ashy bulbul is a small bird known for its soft, musical calls. It often lives in groups and can be found in different kinds of forests. These birds help spread seeds by eating fruits, which is important for the forest ecosystem.

Different Kinds of Ashy Bulbuls

Scientists group living things into different types. Sometimes, a species can have slightly different groups called "subspecies." These groups look a bit different or live in different places.

There are five known subspecies of the ashy bulbul:

  • H. f. flavala - This one was first described by Edward Blyth in 1845. You can find it in the eastern Himalayas, parts of Bangladesh, Myanmar, and southern China.
  • H. f. hildebrandi - This subspecies was named by Allan Octavian Hume in 1874. It lives in eastern Myanmar and northwestern Thailand.
  • H. f. davisoni - Hume also named this one in 1877. It is found in southeastern Myanmar and southwestern Thailand.
  • H. f. bourdellei - Jean Théodore Delacour described this subspecies in 1926. It lives in southern China, eastern Thailand, and parts of Laos.
  • H. f. remotus - This subspecies was named by Herbert Girton Deignan in 1957. It is found in southern Indochina.

Where They Live

Ashy bulbuls prefer to live in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. They also live in moist montane forests, which are forests found on mountains. These habitats provide the food and shelter they need to survive.
