Asphalt is a small, unincorporated community located in Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Where is Asphalt Located?

Asphalt is about 5 miles (8 km) west of Brownsville. Brownsville is the main town and county seat of Edmonson County. You can get to Asphalt using Kentucky Route 655 (also known as Segal Road). This road connects to KY 70. The community is about 2.5 miles (4 km) southwest of where KY 655 meets KY 70 in a place called Windyville.

Interesting Places to Visit

Asphalt has some cool historical spots nearby.

The Mathias Willis Store House

Close to Asphalt, you can find the Mathias Willis Store House. It's located at the end of Salvage Road. This old store building was built in the mid-1800s. It used to serve people traveling along the Green River, which flows just south of the community. In 1987, this historic store house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

Local Churches

Asphalt is home to the Asphalt Church of Christ. This church was once called New Liberty Church. It's one of several places of worship in Edmonson County.

Church History and Celebrations

The Asphalt Church often holds special Gospel Meetings, also known as revivals, in mid-June. In 2015, the church celebrated its 140th anniversary! People believe the church was first started in 1875. The original church building sadly burned down in 1951 due to faulty wiring. The church was rebuilt in 1952 at its current spot and renamed the Asphalt Church. Even though the name changed, some old maps and even online maps like Google Maps still show it as the New Liberty Church.

Education for Students

Students living in Asphalt go to schools in the Edmonson County Schools system. This includes Edmonson County High School, which is located in Brownsville.

Asphalt's Old School Building

Long ago, Asphalt had its own high school. However, it closed down before all of Edmonson County's high schools joined together in 1959. The old Asphalt School building is still standing today. It hasn't been used since the 1950s and is not in good shape anymore.

Postal Services

Asphalt does not have its own post office today. Because of this, people in Asphalt use the zip code 42210, which belongs to Brownsville. The original Asphalt post office closed in 1958. This was several years before the zip code system was even created!
