Windyville is a small, unincorporated community in Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government.
History of Windyville
The very first home in Windyville was built around the 1850s. It was first used as a place to store timber, which is wood cut from trees.
The name Windyville comes from its old nickname, "Kentucky's Windy City." There was even a restaurant called "Windy City Cafe" inside a local store. This store closed in 2003 because new shops opened nearby.
Location and Geography
Windyville is located in the middle part of Edmonson County. It is about 3 miles (4.8 km) west-northwest of Brownsville. You can find it along Kentucky Route 70.
Education for Students
Students living in Windyville go to schools run by Edmonson County Schools. This includes Edmonson County High School, which is in Brownsville.
Long ago, Windyville had its own school called Blanton School. There was also a school in nearby Asphalt. These local schools closed when all high schools in Edmonson County joined together in 1959-1960. The old Asphalt School building is still there, but it's not used anymore.
Transportation Routes
Windyville is connected by State Highway 70. This highway links it to Brownsville, which is the main town in Edmonson County. It also connects to Roundhill and Morgantown in Butler County.
In the past, Windyville was also served by the original KY 67. This route connected Windyville to Bowling Green. It used to involve crossing the Green River by a ferry called the Bear Creek Ferry, but that ferry is no longer in service.
