Athens is a small community in Los Angeles County, California. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own city government. Instead, it's managed by Los Angeles County.
In 2000, about 9,101 people lived in Athens. It is also home to Los Angeles Southwest College, a place where students can go to learn and get a college education.

Where is Athens Located?
Athens is in the southern part of Los Angeles County. It's surrounded by other towns and neighborhoods.
- To the north is Westmont.
- To the east is the Broadway-Manchester neighborhood of Los Angeles.
- To the south is Gardena.
- To the west is Hawthorne.
Important roads form Athens' borders. These include Imperial Highway to the north and Vermont Avenue to the east. El Segundo Boulevard and the Gardena city limits are to the south. South Van Ness Avenue, South Wilton Place, and the Hawthorne city boundary are to the west. The Interstate 105 Century Freeway also runs through Athens.
