Athens is a small town, called a "borough", in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, United States. It's in the northeastern part of the state, about two miles south of the New York border. Two important rivers, the Susquehanna and Chemung, meet near Athens.
In 2020, about 3,265 people lived in Athens. Athens is part of a group of four nearby towns called "The Valley". These towns are Athens, Sayre, and South Waverly in Pennsylvania, and Waverly in New York. Together, about 30,000 people live in "The Valley".
In 2011, Athens had a big flood from Tropical Storm Lee. Much of the town, especially downtown near the river, was under water.

History of Athens
Athens has some important historical places. These include the Athens Historic District, the Protection of the Flag Monument, and the Spalding Memorial Library-Tioga Point Museum. These sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means they are special and protected.
Geography of Athens
Athens is located in the northern part of Bradford County. It sits on land between the Susquehanna River to the east and the Chemung River to the west. These two rivers meet at a place called Tioga Point, which is south of the borough.
The town of Sayre is just north of Athens. Athens Township surrounds the rest of the borough to the east, west, and south.
Roads and Rivers
U.S. Route 220 is a major highway that runs through the western part of Athens. It's a four-lane road with limited exits. One exit, West Pine Street, is within Athens. This highway goes north to Interstate 86 near the New York state line in South Waverly. To the south, US-220 leads to Towanda.
Pennsylvania Route 199 is the main street in Athens. It goes north through Sayre to I-86. When it crosses into New York, it becomes New York State Route 34. South of Athens, PA-199 crosses the Chemung River and ends at US-220. Front Street crosses the Susquehanna River to the east into a nearby area called East Athens.
The United States Census Bureau says that Athens covers about 1.78 square miles (4.61 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 0.03 square miles (0.07 square kilometers), is water.
