History of Atlanta
Atlanta was officially planned and marked out in 1858. The town was named after the city of Atlanta, Georgia. A post office opened in Atlanta, Missouri, in 1868.
Important Air Safety Event
On May 6, 1935, a TWA airplane, Flight 6, got lost in thick fog near Atlanta. The plane was flying from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. It ran out of fuel, and the pilot tried to land it in an emergency. Sadly, the plane crashed. Four people died, and many others were hurt.
One of the people who died was Senator Bronson Cutting from New Mexico. This crash was a big news story across the country. It led the government to create a special report. This report helped make air travel much safer for everyone.
City Hall Relocation
In the summer of 2022, Atlanta's City Hall moved to a new spot. The old Atlanta Methodist Church building became available. The city bought it, and it is now the new City Hall. The building that used to be City Hall was turned into a memorial. It honors a past mayor, Owen L. "Woody" Woodward.
Geography of Atlanta
Atlanta is located in the northeastern part of Macon County. U.S. Route 63 is a main road that runs just east of the city. This road goes north about 9 miles (14 km) to La Plata. It also goes south about 11 miles (18 km) to Macon, which is the county seat.
Getting to Atlanta
You can reach Atlanta by train using Amtrak. The closest station is in La Plata, on the Southwest Chief line. This train goes all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles. You can also take Amtrak from Quincy, Illinois, to Chicago.
If you prefer flying, there are flights to nearby Kirksville or Quincy. Longer drives connect to airports in Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City.
Land and Water
Atlanta covers an area of about 0.34 square miles (0.89 km²). Only a tiny part of this area is water. The city sits on a raised area of land. Water from this area flows in two directions. Some water goes west towards Long Branch. This branch flows south into the Little Chariton River, which then joins the Missouri River. Other water flows east towards the Middle Fork of the Salt River. The Salt River flows east into the Mississippi River.

According to the 2010 census, there were 385 people living in Atlanta. These people lived in 157 households, with 104 of them being families. Most residents (97.1%) were White. About 28.1% of the people were under 18 years old. The average age in the city was about 37.9 years.
Sports and Community Groups
People in Atlanta love their local sports teams, the "Hornets." Their school colors are blue and white. Atlanta's high school is part of the MSHSAA, which is the Missouri State High School Activities Association.
In 1998, the Atlanta Lady Hornets basketball team won the state championship. They had an amazing record of 31 wins and 0 losses! In 2015, the Hornets baseball team came in second place in their state game.

Churches in Atlanta
The Atlanta community has several churches. Two churches are located right inside the city: the Atlanta Christian Church and the Atlanta First Baptist Church. There are also smaller country churches just outside the city limits.
Annual Events and Fun Activities
Atlanta hosts a special event called the "Atlanta Homecoming." This happens every year on the last full weekend in June at Atterberry Park, right in the town center.
Other fun activities downtown include the "Big Wheels" event. The Atlanta PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) hosts this every September. Also, Crossroads Christian Church of Macon puts on an egg hunt the Saturday before Easter each year.
The school also has sports events for younger kids. The PTO hosts a Little Dribblers Tournament in March. A Pee Wee Baseball Tournament is held in May.
Education in Atlanta
The local school district is called Atlanta C-3. About 200 students from kindergarten through 12th grade attend school here each year. In 2007, the U.S. Department of Education named the district a National Blue Ribbon School. This award recognizes schools for being excellent.
In 2019, Atlanta Elementary was ranked 7th out of over 1,000 elementary schools in Missouri. This ranking was based on how well students scored on state tests.
The Home Pioneer 4-H Club is based in Atlanta. 4-H is a youth organization that helps kids learn new skills. This club has 90 members, making it one of the biggest 4-H clubs in Missouri.
Recreation and Outdoor Fun
Many visitors come to the Atlanta area for hunting. They often look for whitetail deer and turkey.
There are also many natural areas and parks nearby. These places are protected by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Notable People from Atlanta
- Milton Romjue (1874–1968) – He was a Democrat who served in the United States Congress. He went to local schools and lived near the Love Lake area.
- Andrew Taylor Still (1828–1917) – He is known as the founder of osteopathic medicine. It is very likely that he worked in the Atlanta area, just as he did in nearby Macon.
