Atsushi Kimura (木村 敦志, Kimura Atsushi, born May 1, 1984) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a goalkeeper. He spent his entire professional career playing for Gamba Osaka, a well-known football club in Japan.
Atsushi Kimura's Club Career
Atsushi Kimura was born in Ibaraki, Osaka, Japan, on May 1, 1984. He started his football journey by joining the youth team of Gamba Osaka in 2000. After playing for their youth squad for a few years, he moved up to the main professional team in 2003.
For many years, it was tough for Atsushi to play in official matches. This was because there were two other very good goalkeepers, Naoki Matsuyo and Yosuke Fujigaya, who were usually chosen to play instead of him.
He finally got to play in his first big match in December 2009. This was during a semifinal game in the Emperor's Cup, which is a major football tournament in Japan.
In May 2012, Atsushi got a chance to be the main goalkeeper for Gamba Osaka. But sadly, he got injured in June of that same year. This injury meant he couldn't play for a while and lost his spot as the starting goalkeeper.
Atsushi Kimura decided to stop playing professional football at the end of the 2014 season. He played for Gamba Osaka for 12 years. During his time with the club, he played in 6 league matches, 1 Emperor's Cup match, and 3 continental matches (like the AFC Champions League).
Atsushi Kimura's National Team Career
In September 2001, when Atsushi Kimura was 17 years old, he was chosen to be part of the Japan U-17 national team. This team played in the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championship, which is a big international tournament for young players.
Even though he was part of the team, Atsushi did not get to play in any matches during the tournament. Another goalkeeper, Kenta Tokushige, was chosen to play instead of him.
