Au Sable (pronounced "AW SAH-buhl") is a small community in Iosco County, Michigan, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a recognized area for gathering census data, but it doesn't have its own city government.
In 2020, about 1,453 people lived in Au Sable. The community is located in Au Sable Township. It sits right where the Au Sable River flows into Lake Huron.

History of Au Sable
Au Sable has a long and interesting history. It started as a small settlement and grew into a city before facing big challenges.
Early Settlement and Growth
The first people to settle in Au Sable arrived in 1848. Curtis Emerson and James Eldridge bought land here. The community was officially mapped out, or platted, the very next year in 1849.
A post office opened in Au Sable on September 23, 1856. It was named after the nearby Au Sable River. The community was re-mapped in 1867. It then became an official village in 1872.
Becoming a City and Later Challenges
Au Sable grew to be the biggest community in Iosco County. Because of its size, it became a city in 1889. By 1890, the city had a population of 4,328 people.
However, a major forest fire in 1911 destroyed most of the city. This was a huge setback for Au Sable. The post office closed in December 1912. By 1930, only 61 people lived there. In 1931, Au Sable gave up its city status. It became an unincorporated community within Au Sable Township once again.

Au Sable covers a total area of about 2.13 square miles (5.52 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.10 square miles (5.44 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometers), is water.
Location and Nearby Areas
The community is located on the south side of the Au Sable River. This is where the river meets Lake Huron. The community of Oscoda is located on the north side of the river, right across from Au Sable. Students in Au Sable attend schools in the Oscoda Area Schools district.

- US 23 is a main highway that runs north and south. It passes along the eastern edge of Au Sable, close to Lake Huron.
