Aubrey de Vere, 10th Earl of Oxford was an important English nobleman. He lived from about 1338 to 1400. He was the third son of John de Vere, 7th Earl of Oxford. His mother was Maud de Badlesmere.

Becoming an Earl
Aubrey de Vere had three brothers and three sisters. His older brothers, John and Robert, passed away young. His brother Thomas became the 8th Earl of Oxford. Thomas's son, Robert, then became the 9th Earl.
Robert, the 9th Earl, died in 1392 without children. This meant Aubrey inherited the title. He became the 10th Earl of Oxford.
Serving the King
Early Roles
Aubrey de Vere held many important jobs for the king. In 1360, he became the manager of the royal forest in Havering, Essex. In 1367, he joined the household of the Black Prince. He was paid well to serve the prince for life.
He was made a knight. In 1375, he became the constable of Wallingford Castle. This meant he was in charge of the castle. He also received special honors related to Wallingford. Later, he traded Wallingford for Hadleigh Castle in 1378.
Diplomat and Advisor
King Edward III sent Aubrey de Vere to France. His job was to help make peace between the two countries. This shows he was trusted by the king.
In 1381, Aubrey became a Chamberlain of the Royal Household. This was a high-ranking position. He also joined the privy council. This group advised the king on important matters.
Regaining His Title
In 1388, Aubrey's nephew, Robert, the 9th Earl, faced serious accusations. This caused Aubrey to lose his job as chamberlain. However, after Robert's death in 1392, the king gave Aubrey the title of Earl of Oxford. This allowed him to take a seat in Parliament.
Aubrey de Vere passed away on April 23, 1400. His son, Richard, became the 11th Earl of Oxford.
