Auchenionchus is a group, or genus, of fish known as blennies. These special fish are part of the Labrisomidae family. They are only found in the Pacific Ocean waters near Chile. This means they are endemic to that area.
Meet the Species
The Auchenionchus group includes these types of fish:
- Auchenionchus crinitus (Jenyns, 1841)
- Auchenionchus microcirrhis (Valenciennes, 1836)
- Auchenionchus variolosus (Valenciennes, 1836)
What's in a Name?
The name Auchenionchus comes from two Greek words.
- The first part, auchen, means "neck" or "nape" (the back of the neck).
- The second part, onchos, means "a small bump" or "a sticking-out part".
Scientists believe this name refers to a tiny tentacle, like a small feeler, found on the back of the head or neck of the first species discovered in this group. This first species is called the type species.
