Auenstein is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Aargau. Auenstein is part of the Brugg district.
This town is about 3 kilometers (2 miles) northwest of Lenzburg. It's a peaceful place with a mix of nature and history.

Exploring Auenstein's Location
Auenstein is nestled between the Aare river and the Jura mountains. The village sits on the north bank of the Aare. To its south is the Gislifluh mountain. This mountain is about 772 meters (2,533 feet) high. Its slopes are mostly covered in thick forests. You can also find many open forest meadows there.

A Look Back at Auenstein's History
Auenstein was first mentioned in old records in the year 1212. Back then, it was known as Gowenstein. The town's name likely came from a small castle. This castle, also called Auenstein, was built around the year 1200. It was located right by the Aare river.
The Castle's Story
The Lords of Rinach owned Castle Auenstein until the early 1300s. Sadly, the castle was burned down in 1389. This happened during a war between the Old Swiss Confederacy and the Habsburgs.
Becoming Part of Switzerland
In 1415, the Swiss Confederacy took control of the Aargau region. Auenstein became part of the Bern region. However, the town wasn't owned by the city of Bern itself. Instead, it belonged to some rich families from Bern. In 1528, a big religious change called the Reformation happened. After this, the ownership of the village changed many times.

Auenstein Castle
The Castle Auenstein is on a small cliff next to the Aare river. As you learned, it was destroyed in 1389. For a long time, the ruins were owned by the canton (like a state). But in 1803, they were bought by private owners. The castle was rebuilt to be lived in during 1858. It was given its current look by 1929.
The Parish Church
The local church was first mentioned in 1302. It was built in the Gothic style, which has tall arches and big windows. It also has some older design elements from the Romanesque style, dating back to the 11th century.
Auenstein's Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Auenstein is quite simple but meaningful. It has two main colors, red and white. On the red side, there are two white roses. These roses have green parts and yellow centers. This design is called Per pale Gules two Roses Argent barbed and seeded proper and Argent.
