History of Rupperswil

Long ago, in the 2nd century, people lived here. We know this because a special oven for making tiles from the Roman times was found in 1911. Later, around the 8th century, a village of the Alamanni people started to grow.

The name Rupperswil was first written down in 1173. At that time, the area belonged to the powerful Lenzburg family. Over time, it passed to other important families like the Kyburgs and then the Habsburgs. In 1415, the area became part of the Bern region.

Some knights, called the Lords of Rubiswile, lived here from the 1200s to the mid-1300s. They were like local rulers. Later, other families took over these rights, until Bern bought them in 1521. Rupperswil then became a local court center under Bern's rule. In 1803, Rupperswil joined the new Canton of Aargau.

Church and Religion

For a long time, Rupperswil was part of the church community of Suhr. In 1528, the town changed its religion during the Protestant Reformation. This was a big change in how people practiced their faith. From 1676 to 1681, the people of Rupperswil worked hard to have their own church.

The village church was first built between 1275 and 1370 with money given by the villagers. In 1500, a new part for the choir and a tower were added. The old church was replaced by a new building in 1921–22.

Growth and Industry

In the early 1800s, Rupperswil began to change from a farming village to one with factories. A spinning mill, which made thread and fabric, opened in 1836 and worked until the 1970s.

In 1858, Rupperswil got a train station on the line between Brugg and Aarau. This made it easier to travel and transport goods. In 1874, another train line, the Southern Railway, started being built.

Towards the end of the 1800s, more factories opened. These included places that worked with metal and a sugar factory. Because of these industries, many people in Rupperswil found jobs in factories. In 2004, more than half of the people living there worked in industry. Since the A1 Motorway opened in 1967, more and more people have moved to Rupperswil.
