Aurelio Faustino Monteagudo Cintra (born November 19, 1943 – died November 10, 1990) was a talented baseball player. People often called him "Monty." He was a right-handed pitcher, known for throwing a special pitch called a "screwball." Aurelio played in Major League Baseball (MLB), which is the highest level of professional baseball in the United States and Canada. His father, René Monteagudo, was also a famous baseball player.

Monteagudo's Baseball Journey

Aurelio Monteagudo was born in Caibarién, Cuba. He moved to Venezuela after some big changes happened in his home country.

Playing in Major League Baseball

Monteagudo started his MLB career when he was just 19 years old. His first game was on September 1, 1963, with the Kansas City Athletics. He played for them for over three seasons.

Later, he joined the Houston Astros in 1966. After that season, he became a citizen of Venezuela. With his new nationality, he played for the Chicago White Sox in 1967. He also played for the Kansas City Royals in 1970 and the California Angels in 1973.

In his seven seasons in Major League Baseball, Monteagudo played in 72 games. He had a record of 3 wins and 7 losses. He also recorded 58 strikeouts. A strikeout is when a pitcher throws three pitches that a batter misses or doesn't swing at. His ERA was 5.05, which measures how many runs a pitcher allows. He also had four saves and pitched 132 innings pitched. An inning is a part of a baseball game. He played his last MLB game on September 28, 1973.

Baseball in Venezuela and Mexico

Besides playing in the MLB, Monteagudo had a long and successful career in other leagues. He played for 20 seasons in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. He played for five different teams there. He had a record of 79 wins and 81 losses. He also had 897 strikeouts and a 3.37 ERA in Venezuela.

One amazing moment was on December 20, 1973. Monteagudo almost pitched a no-hitter game. A no-hitter is when a pitcher doesn't let the other team get any hits. He kept the other team from getting a hit for almost the whole game.

Monteagudo also played in the Mexican League. He played for teams like Puebla and Veracruz. In Mexico, he pitched another no-hitter game on March 19, 1979. He also led the league in strikeouts in 1978, with 222 strikeouts!

After he stopped playing in 1981, he became a successful manager in the Mexican League. A manager is like a coach who leads the team.

Aurelio Monteagudo sadly passed away in a car accident in Saltillo, Mexico. This happened just nine days before his 47th birthday.
