Avalon Peninsula facts for kids
The Avalon Peninsula is a large piece of land that sticks out into the ocean. It's located in the southeast part of Newfoundland, which is an island in Canada. This peninsula covers a big area, about 9,270 square kilometers (3,580 square miles).
The Avalon Peninsula is home to many people. About forty percent of everyone living in Newfoundland lives here! It's also where the capital city of the province, St. John's, is located.
The peninsula is connected to the main part of Newfoundland by a narrow strip of land called the Isthmus of Avalon. This strip is only about 5 kilometers (3 miles) wide.
The Avalon Peninsula reaches out into the rich fishing areas near the Grand Banks. These waters are full of fish. The four main bays on the peninsula – Trinity Bay, Conception Bay, St. Mary's Bay, and Placentia Bay – have been important for fishing for a very long time. Fishing has always been a big part of life and work for the people here.
