Avenel is a small and friendly town in Victoria, Australia. It's part of the Shire of Strathbogie local area. In 2011, about 1,048 people called Avenel home.
The town was built along the old Hume Highway. Now, a newer, faster road called the Hume Freeway goes around it. Avenel is a great place for sports. It has clubs for football, netball, tennis, cricket, and lawn bowls. The town is located about 15 minutes north-east of Seymour.

Avenel's History and Famous Residents
Avenel has an interesting past. A very well-known person from Australian history, Ned Kelly, lived here when he was young.
Young Ned Kelly's Heroic Act
When Ned Kelly was a boy, he did something brave in Avenel. He saved another boy from drowning in Hughes Creek. For his courage, he was given a special green silk sash as a reward. Years later, when he was captured by the police after a big event at Glenrowan, he was still wearing this very sash under his armour. Ned Kelly's brother and father are buried in the Avenel cemetery.
Avenel Railway Station
Avenel also has a railway station. This station is on the main train line that connects Melbourne and Albury.
