Avenue of the Arts is a special part of Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's known as a cultural district because it's home to many of the city's important arts places. You can find theaters, music halls, and art schools here. This area stretches from near Washington Avenue in the south to the Cecil B. Moore neighborhood in the north.
The Story of Avenue of the Arts
The idea for Avenue of the Arts began with Mayor Ed Rendell. He wanted to make South Broad Street in Center City a lively place again. The original Avenue of the Arts ran along Broad Street from Locust Street south to Lombard Street.
Later, city leaders under Mayor John F. Street decided to make the Avenue even bigger. They expanded its definition to include North Broad Street. This was done to encourage more growth and development in that area too. A special group called Avenue of the Arts, Inc. helps to manage and promote this important cultural area.
What You Can See and Do
Avenue of the Arts is home to many of Philadelphia's biggest and best theaters. These include the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, which is where the famous Philadelphia Orchestra performs. You can also find the historic Academy of Music and the Miller Theater here.
Other popular spots include the Wilma Theater, Liacouras Center, and Suzanne Roberts Theatre. The University of the Arts also has buildings nearby. Its students often use the Miller Theater for their high-quality productions.
Amazing Musical Instruments
Inside Macy's department store, right where Broad Street circles Penn Square, you can find something truly special. It's the Wanamaker Organ, the largest playing pipe organ in the world! It's famous for its daily concerts.
Art and Music History
The offices and gift shop for Philadelphia International Records are also located along this street. This record label helped create the "Philly Sound" in music. Just south of this area is the Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, a place for jazz music and education.
Near City Hall, you'll find the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This is America's oldest art school and museum, started way back in 1805. It has an amazing collection of American art.
Getting Around the Avenue
It's easy to visit the Avenue of the Arts! There are several parking garages if you come by car. You can also use public transportation provided by SEPTA and DRPA. There are subway stations like Walnut–Locust, 12-13th Street, and 15-16th Street. These stations are served by the Broad Street Line and the Lindenwold Line, making the Avenue very easy to reach.
