History of Avoca

Avoca was founded in 1878. It was named in 1879 after a village called Avoca in County Wicklow, Ireland.

A school for Native American girls operated in Avoca from about 1882 to 1896. It later reopened in 1905 as a military school for boys. Sadly, this school was destroyed by fire on February 12, 1910. The town's water supply was frozen, so firefighters could not save the building.

St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church also had a fire in 1889. It was rebuilt, but the building has since been taken down. Three former Lutheran churches joined together to form Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, which closed in 2018. Today, the Word of Faith Fellowship, started in 1983, is the only church in town.

A public school was built in 1894, but it is no longer used. Avoca also experienced two big fires that caused a lot of damage, one in 1907 and another in 1952.
