Ayerbe is also the name of a village in the Broto municipality. Ayerbe is a small town in Spain. It is located in the Aragon region, specifically in the Hoya de Huesca area. Ayerbe is known for its history and beautiful natural surroundings.

Geography of Ayerbe
Ayerbe is about 28 kilometers (17 miles) from the city of Huesca. It sits near the Gállego river. The town is surrounded by interesting natural features. To the north, you can see the Riglos crags and the Santo Domingo hills. To the east are the villages of Loarre and Loscorrales. To the south, you'll find Lupiñén-Ortilla, and to the west, Biscarrues and Murillo de Gállego.
Ayerbe is 582 meters (1,909 feet) above sea level. Its total area is 63.29 square kilometers (24.44 square miles). The land is mostly dry and stony, with some small hills. You'll find many pine, olive, and almond trees here. Vineyards are also becoming popular again. Some areas to the east and south are used for growing cereals.
The area is home to evergreen oaks, rosemary, and other shrubs. You might spot rabbits, hares, and partridges.
Wildlife and Nature
Ayerbe is a great place for bird watchers. You can see amazing birds like the lammergeier, griffon vulture, and Egyptian vulture. Many other birds of prey also live here. For hunters, there are wild boars, deer, partridge, and quail.
The hills behind Ayerbe are part of the Pre-Pyrenees mountains. These hills can reach over 1,600 meters (5,200 feet) high. However, the town itself is on a flat area at the foot of these hills. This plain eventually leads down to the Ebro River, which is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away.

The center of Ayerbe has two main squares. Next to them is the 16th-century palace of the Marquesses de Ayerbe. This palace is a very old and important building. Many of the town's houses and other buildings are also very old and interesting to see.
Santiago Ramón y Cajal's Connection
Ayerbe is famous because Santiago Ramón y Cajal lived here for ten years. He was a scientist who won the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906. This award is one of the highest honors for discoveries in science.
The town remembers him with a special museum and visitor center. Ayerbe's library also has a large collection of books and documents about Cajal. These are available for everyone to use.
Things to Do and See
Ayerbe has a public library, a casino, and several bars. There's also a municipal swimming pool, which is great for hot days. Around the town, you'll find many paths and roads perfect for walking and cycling.
You can find several restaurants, a hotel, and bed and breakfast places to stay. During the summer, there's a tourist information center in one of the town squares. Other fun places to visit include Fontaneta park and the "La Fuente de los Tres Caños" fountain.
On the hill right behind the town, there's a chapel that has been fixed up. At the other end of the hill are the ruins of an old Moorish castle. You can walk or drive to these spots. They offer amazing views of the countryside, even all the way to the Pyrenees mountains!
Local Treats
Ayerbe is well-known for its "Tortas de Ayerbe." These are sweet, flat, round pastries, often flavored with aniseed. Visitors can also buy local wine, olive oil, and honey.
Fiestas and Celebrations
Ayerbe has several exciting celebrations throughout the year.
Santa Leticia Fiesta
The main festival is the Fiesta of Santa Leticia. It usually takes place around September 9 and lasts for four to six days. During this festival, a statue of Saint Leticia is carried in a parade. Its base is decorated with grapes.
You'll also see figures of giants and "cabezudos" (big-headed figures) parading through the streets. Every night, there are "firework bulls" that race through the town. These are special firework displays shaped like bulls.
In 2005, Ayerbe hosted the 6th meeting of the Giants of Aragon. This event brought together 72 giant figures from all over Aragon. Many bands, musicians, and people carrying the figures took part.
Week of the Mushrooms
Another popular event is "The week of the mushrooms." This has been celebrated in Ayerbe for many years in October. It's a big social event that attracts people from different countries.
