Ayr had it start in the year 1878 by the building of the railroad through that territory. It was named for Doctor Ayr, a railroad official. Ayr was incorporated as a village in 1883.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.18 square miles (0.47 km2), all of it land.
As of the census of 2010, there were 94 people, 35 households, and 26 families residing in the village. The population density was 522.2 inhabitants per square mile (201.6/km2). There were 36 housing units at an average density of 200.0 per square mile (77.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 100.0% White.
There were 35 households of which 34.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.7% were married couples living together, 2.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 25.7% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.15.
The median age in the village was 43.5 years. 28.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 2.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.2% were from 25 to 44; 34.1% were from 45 to 64; and 13.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 50.0% male and 50.0% female.
As of the census of 2000, there were 98 people, 40 households, and 32 families residing in the village. The population density was 568.6 people per square mile (222.6/km²). The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.72.
