Azam Khan (born Mahbubul Haque Khan on 28 February 1950 – died 5 June 2011) was a very famous Bangladeshi singer and songwriter. People called him the "Pop Samrat" (Pop Emperor) and "The Rock Guru." He was the lead singer of the pop-rock band Uccharon.

Azam Khan was also a brave freedom fighter during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. He is seen as one of the most important artists in Bangladeshi folk music. He also helped start Bangla rock music.

He grew up in Dhaka and loved music from a young age. He started his music journey in 1967. In 1969, he joined a big protest against the Pakistani military. This protest led to changes in the government.

In 1971, he and his brothers joined the Liberation War. He trained in India and fought bravely. After the war, he started his band, Uchcharon. They became very popular with songs like "Rail Liner Oi Bostite" in 1975. Other hits included "Alal ar Dulal" and "Saleka Maleka."

In 2019, Azam Khan received the Ekushey Padak award. This is a very high honor in Bangladesh. It recognized his great work in music.

Early Life

Azam Khan was born on 28 February 1950 in Azimpur, Dhaka. His parents were Aftabuddin Khan and Jobeda Begum. His father worked for the government and was also a doctor. His mother was a singer, which helped him love music.

He had three brothers and one sister. In 1956, his family moved to a new house in Kamalapur. He went to Motijheel Provincial School. Later, he attended Siddheswari Boys' High School. He finished high school in 1968.

In 1970, he started college at T & T College. But his studies stopped when he joined the Liberation War.

Fighting for Freedom

In 1969, Azam Khan joined a large protest in East Pakistan. This protest was against the West Pakistan government. He was part of a group called Trinity Artist Group. They wrote songs that spoke out against the Pakistani leaders.

In 1971, his father encouraged him and his brothers to join the war. Azam Khan was 21 years old. He and two friends walked to India to join the freedom fighters. He trained in India at Melaghar Camp. Then, he fought against the Pakistani army in Comilla.

He was part of a special team called Crack Platoon. This team carried out surprise attacks in Dhaka. Azam Khan was in charge of operations in the Jatrabari-Gulshan area. One important mission was "Operation Titas." Their goal was to cut off gas pipelines to Dhaka. This was to show the world what was happening in Bangladesh. During a fight, he was hurt in his left ear. Azam Khan returned to Dhaka in December 1971.

Music Career

After the war, Azam Khan went back to his passion for music. He started his band, Uchcharon, in 1972. The band quickly became famous. Azam Khan became known as the "Rock Guru."

He performed on Bangladesh Television with other rock singers. Some of his most popular songs include:

Passing Away

Azam Khan passed away on 5 June 2011. He was 61 years old. He had been sick with oral cancer, which had spread to his lungs. After his death, his family started the "Azam Khan Foundation" in 2013. This foundation helps artists who are in need.

Azam Khan, along with other artists like Fakir Alamgir and Ferdous Wahid, helped create popular music in Bangladesh. Many musicians say he started Bangladeshi rock music. Singer Habib Wahid said, "The history of Bangladeshi rock music began with Azam Khan."

Musical Influences

Azam Khan was inspired by many famous singers. He liked Indian singers such as Kishore Kumar, Hemanta Mukherjee, and Manna Dey. He also loved British rock bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. He was especially interested in George Harrison. Harrison held a concert in 1971 to support the liberation army in Bangladesh.
