History of the Theatre
Early Beginnings
Towards the end of the 1800s, Russian acting groups started performing a lot in Baku. One very well-known group was led by Polonsky. This group performed at the Tagiyev Theater for over twenty years. They had many plays ready, along with costumes and decorations. They performed five days a week. On Fridays, the Tagiyev Theater was rented out to different Azerbaijani theatre groups.
Challenges and New Starts
In February 1918, a big fire badly damaged the theatre building. After this, Polonsky's acting group started to break apart. In the spring of 1920, a Russian theatre group called "Yarasa" visited Baku. But in April of that year, the group split up because of the Red Army's arrival. Some actors from the group stayed in Baku.
A new theatre was created in Baku called the State Theater of Independent Criticism and Entertainment. It was also known as "Satiragit." This theatre aimed to promote new ideas using local actors. Their first show was on December 20, 1920.
Becoming the Baku Workers' Theater
The first shows included short plays like "Lenin's Rhapsody" and "Parrot." The theatre often changed its plays and started touring worker areas in Baku. In 1923, the theatre was renamed the Baku Workers' Theater.
On October 25, the play "The City in the Ring" was performed for the first time. New actors from Moscow, Odessa, and Irkutsk joined the group. The theatre mostly performed plays about revolution and Soviet ideas. Important plays included "Lyubov Yarovaya" and "Armored train 14-69."
Growth and Recognition
In 1924, a training studio for actors opened at the Baku Workers' Theater. Famous professionals like V. Fedorov and S. Maiorov led it. More talented actors, including Faina Ranevskaya, joined the theatre.
In 1930, the theatre received the Red Flag Order. This was for its great work in promoting revolutionary ideas. The theatre kept growing and trying new types of plays. In 1937, it was renamed the Azerbaijan State Red Banner Theater of Russian Drama.
The theatre started touring many cities in the North Caucasus, Transcaucasia, and later across the entire Soviet Union. Many talented directors worked with the theatre during this time.
Naming After Samad Vurgun
In 1956, the theatre was named after the famous poet and playwright Samad Vurgun.
From the 1960s to the 1980s, the theatre performed many works by G. Akhmedova-Martynova, D. Selimova, and others. Many new actors joined the group, including M. Yagizarov, T. Galakichieva, and L. Dukhovnaya.
The Russian Drama Theater named after Samad Vurgun was honored with two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor.
Today, the theatre performs three main types of plays:
- Plays by world classic writers.
- Plays by Russian classic writers.
- New plays by modern world and Russian writers.
- Plays by classic and modern Azerbaijani artists.
Some plays by Azerbaijani authors include "Horsepower" and "Vizier of Lenkoran Khanate" by Mirza Fatali Akhundzade. Also, "Vagif" and "Farhad and Shirin" by Samad Vurgun are performed.
