What the National Guard Does
The National Guard has very important jobs. They help keep the country safe and protect important people and places.
Protecting Important People and Places
The Special State Protection Service (SSPS) is a military group that reports directly to the President of Azerbaijan. Their main jobs include:
- Protecting the President of Azerbaijan.
- Keeping the National Assembly of Azerbaijan (which is like the country's parliament) safe.
- Guarding the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other important government offices.
- Making sure important foreign leaders are safe when they visit Azerbaijan.
Guarding Important Pipelines
One of the most important tasks for the SSPS is to protect the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan petroleum and natural gas pipelines. They also guard the South Caucasus petroleum pipeline. These pipelines are very important for moving oil and gas. NATO helps the SSPS with helicopters and military vehicles to keep these pipelines secure.
Role During Wartime
If there is a war, the Azerbaijani National Guard works together with the Azerbaijani Land Forces. They can help with the country's defense and security. This means they help protect the country alongside the regular army.
Other Security Forces in Azerbaijan
Besides the National Guard, Azerbaijan has other groups that help keep the country safe and enforce laws. These include the Internal Troops of Azerbaijan and the State Border Service of Azerbaijan, which also has a Coast Guard branch.
