Who Was Ba Mamadou Mbaré?
Ba Mamadou Mbaré was born in 1946 in a village called Waly Diantang. This village is in southwest Mauritania, close to the border with Senegal.
His Education and Early Career
After finishing his primary and secondary school in Mauritania, he went to study in the Soviet Union. From 1967 to 1973, he attended the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev. There, he earned a degree in veterinary medicine, which means he became a doctor for animals.
When he returned to Mauritania, he worked as a researcher at the Laboratory of Fisheries from 1974 to 1975. Later, he became the head of the Laboratory of Fisheries in Nouadhibou. He also led the department of oceanography and marine biology from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1980, he was the Director of the National Center of Oceanographic and Fishing Research.
His Political Journey
Mbaré served as a special advisor to the Minister of Fishing and the Maritime Economy from 1980 to 1981. He also became the Mayor of Wali Commune, serving from 1986 to 2003. During this time, he continued to work as an official at the Ministry of Fishing and the Maritime Economy.
In 2002, he was appointed as the Director-General of the Autonomous Port of Nouadhibou. He held this important position until 2003. Even though he didn't agree with President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya's policies, he worked in Taya's government. He was the Minister of Fishing and the Maritime Economy from November 13, 2003, until Taya's government was changed in August 2005.
Mbaré was elected to the Senate, representing Maghama, in the Senate election held in early 2007. After this election, he was chosen as the President of the Senate on April 26, 2007. Most Senators, 40 of them, voted for Mbaré, while 11 voted for another Senator, Ahmed Salem Ould Bakar.
His Time as Acting President
On August 6, 2008, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz took control of the country, and President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi was no longer in charge. Abdel Aziz later decided to step down from all his political and military roles on April 15, 2009. He did this so he could run as a candidate in the July 2009 presidential election, as required by Mauritania's laws.
Because he was the President of the Senate, Ba Mamadou Mbaré became the temporary Head of State. He was the first black leader of Mauritania. Abdel Aziz won the election and became the official president on August 5, 2009. At that point, Mbaré's time as acting president ended.
