Who Was Prince Bagrat?

Prince Bagrat was born in Madrid, Spain, on January 12, 1949. His full name was Bagrat Juan María de Fátima de Todos los Santos. He was the third child of Prince Irakli Bagration-Mukhrani. His mother was Infanta Doña María de las Mercedes de Baviera y Borbón. She was a niece of King Alphonso XIII of Spain.

His godparents were important Spanish royals. They were Don Juan and Doña Mercedes de Borbón-Dos Sicilias y Orléans. They were known as the Count and Countess of Barcelona. Prince Bagrat's great-grandfather on his mother's side was King Alfonso XII.

Prince Bagrat had an older half-brother named Prince Jorge de Bagration. Jorge was a Spanish race car driver. He was also a claimant to the throne of Georgia.

His Early Life and Family

Even though his father was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, he left after his studies. He lived in Italy and France for a short time. Later, he became a Spanish citizen in 1947. Prince Bagrat's mother was born in Madrid.

Bagrat grew up in Madrid with his older sister, Princess Mariam (born 1947). They also spent time at the Palacio de Santillana del Mar in Santander. Their father raised them after their mother passed away.

A Knight of Malta

Prince Bagrat was also a knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. This is a very old Catholic order. It is known for its charity work around the world. He became a knight on January 31, 1980.

His Family Life

Prince Bagrat married Doña María del Carmen de Ulloa y Suelves on November 12, 1976. Their wedding took place in Madrid. María del Carmen was the daughter of a Spanish nobleman.

They had two children together:

  • Prince Juan Jorge Bagration-Mukhransky, born on August 18, 1977, in Madrid. He married Florianne del Rio Thorn in 2003, but they later divorced. Juan remarried in 2014 to Princess Kristine Bagration-Mukhransky.
  • Princess Inés Bagration-Moukhransky, born on December 4, 1980, in Madrid.

Prince Bagrat and María del Carmen divorced in 2005. He later married Françoise Cazaudehore in a civil ceremony on March 7, 2009. This wedding took place in Saint Germain-en-Laye, France.
