History
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War ended, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is an official count of how many people live in an area. This first count found that the combined population of the Jagüeyes and Bairoa barrios was 1,099 people.
