Baitul Mukarram (which means "The Holy House" in Arabic) is the national mosque of Bangladesh. It is located in the heart of Dhaka, the capital city. This mosque is a very important place for Muslims in Bangladesh.

A Look at Baitul Mukarram Mosque

Baitul Mukarram is one of the largest mosques in the world. It can hold about 40,000 people at one time. This makes it a huge gathering place for prayers, especially during important Islamic festivals.

How Was It Built?

The idea for Baitul Mukarram came about in 1959. Construction officially began on January 27, 1960. The mosque was designed by an architect named Abdulhusein M. Thariani. It took several years to build, and it was finally completed in 1968.

Unique Design of the Mosque

The design of Baitul Mukarram is quite special. Unlike many traditional mosques that have a large dome, Baitul Mukarram does not. Instead, its main building looks like the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Kaaba is the most sacred building in Islam. This unique design makes Baitul Mukarram stand out.

The mosque has several entrance porticoes, which are like covered porches. These porticoes have domes, adding to the mosque's beauty. The main building itself is about 99 feet tall.

What Happens Inside?

Inside the mosque, there are large prayer halls. These halls are where Muslims perform their daily prayers. The mosque also has a special area called the mihrab, which shows the direction of the Kaaba. There is also a minbar, which is a raised platform where the Imam (prayer leader) gives sermons.

Baitul Mukarram is not just a place for prayer. It also has shops, libraries, and offices. This makes it a busy center for the community.
