History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special kind of area that belongs to the U.S. but is not a state. It is called an unincorporated territory.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 881 people lived in the Bajura Adentro barrio at that time.
