History of Bakers Hill
The town of Bakers Hill has an interesting past. When it was first started in 1897, it was known by a different name: Mount Baker.
Why the Name Changed
In 1902, the name was changed to Baker's Hill. This was done to avoid confusion with another town called Mount Barker, which is located in a different part of Western Australia. Later, in 1944, the apostrophe was removed from the name, making it simply Bakers Hill, as it is known today.
Military History
During World War II, Bakers Hill played a small part in Australia's defense efforts. It was home to the 62nd Field Park Company of the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). The RAE is a part of the Australian Army responsible for engineering tasks, like building bridges or roads.
Old Railway Line
Bakers Hill used to be an important stop on the second route of the Eastern Railway. This railway line connected Midland Junction to Spencers Brook.
When the Railway Closed
However, this railway track was closed in 1966. A new route was opened through the Avon Valley, which made the old line less necessary. Even though the railway tracks were removed in 1980, you can still see parts of the old station platform today.
Climate in Bakers Hill
Bakers Hill has a Mediterranean climate. This means it has hot and dry summers, which are perfect for outdoor activities. The winters are cool and usually quite wet, bringing much-needed rain to the area.
