How They Started
Eddie, Jesse, and Jonathan all grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. They lived in the same neighborhood called Woodley Park. Jesse was a great football player at Cloverdale Junior High. He continued playing at Jefferson Davis High School.
Jonathan and Eddie both played drums in the marching band at Sidney Lanier High School. Even though they knew each other from their neighborhood and school, they didn't make music together until the summer of 2000.
By the fall of 2001, Eddie, Jesse, and Jonathan were all going to Alabama A&M University. They became well-known for throwing fun parties. They even made funny TV commercials to advertise their parties. They also created a popular school song and dance.
In 2003, a famous music producer named Mathew Knowles met the Bama Boyz. Mathew Knowles helped create the super popular group Destiny's Child. He saw the Bama Boyz working in the music studio and immediately offered them a deal.
This chance came when Mathew Knowles was the main speaker and judge at a special event. Eddie, Jesse, and Jonathan had created and hosted this event at Alabama A&M University. Mathew was very impressed by how professional they were. He also liked how well they promoted things. So, he invited the boys to do an internship at his company, Music World Entertainment, in Houston, TX.
When the trio arrived in Houston, they learned that the internship didn't pay any money. They were used to making money from their weekly parties back in Alabama. So, they quickly figured out a way to make money.
After just three weeks in Houston, they started a successful teen night at a local club. This helped them pay for rent, food, and other things. While interning at Mathew's company, they did something bold. They took the singing part (without music) from Beyoncé's song "Crazy in Love". Then, they made a brand new music track for her singing.
At that time, Mathew didn't even know the Bama Boyz produced music. One day, after a meeting, Eddie and Jesse followed Mathew into his office. They put their "Crazy in Love Remix" into his stereo, turned up the volume, and hit play! Mathew was surprised by their brave move, but he really liked their new version of the song. He told them they could use the Music World studio anytime.
After watching them work in the studio for a few days, Mathew invited the Bama Boyz to his boat. This was on Clear Lake Shores, Texas. That's where he offered them a special contract to produce music.
Their Music Journey
The Bama Boyz's first big music projects were two remixes for Solange Knowles. These were called "Ain't No Way Bama Boyz Remix" and "Just Like You Bama Boyz Remix." Their first chance to work on a movie soundtrack was for Roll Bounce. They helped produce some of the music for that film.
In 2005, the Bama Boyz produced the Destiny's Child song "Home for the Holiday." This song became a big part of Wal-Mart's national Christmas ads. "Home for the Holiday" was also added to Destiny's Child's album 8 Days of Christmas. This success made the Bama Boyz interested in making music for commercials and movies.
The Bama Boyz then worked on music for two more Wal-Mart commercials. They became very good at making music for films and TV shows. They created music for movies like Bring It On: All or Nothing, The Pink Panther, and Save the Last Dance 2.
They also made music for a Ford Fusion Commercial with Funkmaster Flex. Other projects included MTV's Super Sweet 16 TV Series and Last Holiday. They even produced the theme song for Nickelodeon's "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy" which featured Beyoncé! They also worked on music for BET's One Night Only and the UK's Channel 4 show Chancers.
The Bama Boyz also loved working with artists. They produced 8 songs for the very popular gospel group Trin-I-Tee 5:7's "T57" album. Their work on this album helped it reach #2 on the Gospel Charts. It also earned them a Grammy Nomination and a Dove Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album.
The Bama Boyz also made music for "Baby Jamz." This was a toy line for young children that played hip-hop and rhythm music. The toy line also had a CD with hip-hop nursery rhymes, which included their music. They also produced the theme song for a series of books called Princess Inc.
They produced two songs for Solange's album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. These songs were "ChampagneChronicNightcap" (featuring Lil Wayne) and "Valentine's Day." They also made the "Ring the Alarm Bama Boyz Remix" and got Rick Ross and Mike Jones to be on it.
On Beyoncé's album I Am... Sasha Fierce, the Bama Boyz produced "Why Don't You Love Me." This song mixes electronic dance music with urban music, which is their special style. "Why Don't You Love Me" became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. This was the Bama Boyz's first number-one hit and Beyoncé's twelfth!
