Barceloneta barrio-pueblo is a special area in Barceloneta, a town in Puerto Rico. It's like the main downtown part of the town. This area is where the town's government buildings are located. In 2010, about 435 people lived here.

Just like in Spain, towns in Puerto Rico often have a central area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special festivals called Fiestas patronales (which celebrate a patron saint) are held in this central square.

The Central Plaza and Its Church

The central plaza, or town square, is a lively spot for everyone. It's used for both official events and fun activities. People gather here from morning until night to chat and relax.

Back in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said that the plaza should be big enough for "parties" (celebrations and festivals). They also said that streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.

Right across from the central plaza in Barceloneta barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen church. The first church building was made of stone with a wooden roof. It opened around 1881. Sadly, a big storm called Hurricane San Felipe destroyed it in 1928.

The church you see today was built in 1930. It was likely designed by an architect named Luis Perocier. Since it was first built, the church has been updated and made larger.

History of Barceloneta Barrio-Pueblo

After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.

In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 1,459 people lived in the Barceloneta barrio area at that time.
