A Look at Barina's History
How Barina Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the U.S. government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. They found that 1,432 people lived in Barina barrio at that time.

Where is Barina Located?
Barina barrio is found in the southern part of the town of Yauco. It is right next to downtown Yauco, which is also known as Yauco Pueblo. It also borders other barrios like Susúa Baja and Jácana.
Rivers and Land in Barina
The Yauco River flows through Barina from north to south. This river creates a flat area that is perfect for farming. The rest of Barina is made up of hills. These hills are part of a special rocky area in southern Puerto Rico called the Southern Karst region.

Guánica State Forest: A Natural Treasure
A big part of the Guánica State Forest is located in Barina. This forest is one of the largest and best-kept dry forests in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. It's a great place to see unique plants and animals.
The state forest is also home to some beautiful beaches:
- Atolladora Beach, also known as Yauco Beach, is the biggest beach in the area. It is located in Ballena Bay, within the Guánica State Forest. This beach is next to Ballena Beach (in Guánica) and Tamarindo Beach (in Guayanilla). You can get to Atolladora Beach by taking road PR-333.
