The Life and Art of Barly Baruti
Early Life and First Comics
Barly Baruti first studied pedagogy, which is the study of teaching. After that, he worked at a graphics studio in Kisangani. In 1982, he created his first published comic book there. It was called Le Temps d'agir, which means Time to Act, and it was about protecting the environment.
Training and Moving Abroad
In 1984, Baruti won a comics competition. This led to an invitation to study how to write comics in Angoulême, France. Later, in 1987, he worked for a few months at the famous Studios Hergé in Brussels, Belgium. This studio is known for creating the Tintin comics.
He returned to Congo and published more comic albums. In 1992, he moved to Belgium. In 1994, a cultural center in Kisangani published another of his albums, Objectif Terre! (Objective: Earth!). This comic was also about environmental protection.
Famous Works and Style Changes
In the late 1990s, Barly Baruti worked with Frank Giroud to create Eva K. This was a series of three comic albums. After that, they created Mandrill, which was a longer series with seven albums. For these works, Baruti changed his drawing style. He moved from a more humorous, clear style to a more realistic one.
Encouraging Young Artists
In December 2010, Barly Baruti was invited to a special event in Paris. It was the first international exhibition of African comics. He is also a co-founder of an organization called Atelier de Création et de l'Initiation à l'Art. This group helps talented young people in Kinshasa learn about art and creativity.
