Baruti Kandolo Lilela, known to many as Barly Baruti, is a famous cartoonist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was born on December 9, 1959, in Kisangani. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has called him "the Congolese author best known outside his country." This means his comics are popular around the world!

Baruti's Journey as a Cartoonist

Barly Baruti first studied pedagogy, which is about teaching. Later, he worked at a special art studio in Kisangani. In 1982, he created his first published comic book there. It was called Le Temps d'agir (Time to Act). This comic was all about protecting our planet.

Learning and Growing

In 1984, Baruti won a comics competition. This amazing win led him to Angoulême, France. He went there to learn even more about creating comics. A few years later, in 1987, he worked for a short time at the famous Studios Hergé in Brussels, Belgium. This is where the Tintin comics were made!

Creating New Stories

After his time in Europe, Baruti returned to Congo. He published several comic albums there. In 1992, he moved to Belgium. Even after moving, he kept creating. In 1994, his comic Objectif Terre! (Objective: Earth!) was published. It was another strong message about caring for the environment.

In the late 1990s, Baruti worked on some big projects. He teamed up with another writer, Frank Giroud. Together, they created Eva K, a series of three comic albums. They also made Mandrill, which was a longer series with seven albums. For these comics, Baruti changed his drawing style. He moved from a fun, clear style to one that looked more realistic.

Sharing His Talent

Barly Baruti's work has been recognized internationally. In December 2010, he was invited to a special event in Paris. It was the first international exhibition of African comics. This showed how important his work is in the world of comics.

Baruti also cares about helping young artists. He helped start the Atelier de Création et de l'Initiation à l'Art. This means "Creative Workshop for an Initiation to Art." It's a place in Kinshasa where talented young people can learn about art and comics.
