Barnum is a small place in Mineral County, West Virginia, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government. Barnum was also once a coal town. This means it grew because of coal mining.

Barnum is part of a larger area called the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located along the North Branch Potomac River. A Western Maryland Railroad line, which is no longer used, also runs through Barnum.

Barnum is found downstream from the Jennings Randolph Lake. This lake is located between West Virginia and Maryland. It is also on the North Branch of the Potomac River.

The community of Barnum was named after William H. Barnum. He was an important official who worked for the railroad.
