Barros Blancos is a city located in the southern part of Uruguay, within the Canelones Department. It's a busy place that was once called Juan Antonio Artigas for a while. This name honored Juan Antonio Artigas, who was the grandfather of José Gervasio Artigas, a famous national hero of Uruguay. However, the city's original name, Barros Blancos, was brought back in 2007.

The name Barros Blancos also refers to the larger area, or municipality, that the city belongs to. This municipality includes the city itself and some nearby rural areas.

Where is Barros Blancos Located?

The city of Barros Blancos is found along Route 8. It is located northeast of Montevideo, which is the capital city of Uruguay. Barros Blancos is also on the road that leads to Pando.

It sits north of Colonia Nicolich and southwest of Toledo and Joaquín Suárez. Barros Blancos is like an extension of the urban area of Pando. All these places are part of the larger metropolitan area of Montevideo.

A Brief History of Barros Blancos

Barros Blancos started as a rural area. At first, it didn't have basic services like electricity, water, or telephones. The main activities were related to meat canning, sawmills, and making bricks.

Early Development and Growth

The very first school in the area opened in 1925. By the mid-1940s, important public services became available. Factories, shops, and sports clubs also started to appear. In the middle of the 20th century, many people moved to Barros Blancos. This was because new industries created lots of jobs. Families could buy affordable homes there, which helped the population grow quickly.

Becoming a Town and City

On October 15, 1963, Barros Blancos was officially recognized as a "Villa," which means a town. Later, on June 25, 1976, its name was changed to "Juan Antonio Artigas." This was done to honor Juan Antonio Artigas, the grandfather of Uruguay's national hero, José Gervasio Artigas.

On December 13, 2006, the area was declared a "City," still under the name Juan Antonio Artigas. However, less than a year later, on June 11, 2007, the city's name was changed back to its original "Barros Blancos."

Population Note for 2011

You might notice a big jump in the population from 2004 to 2011. This is because the 2011 census included people from two areas called Fraccionamiento Camino Maldonado. These areas had a population of 15,057 in 2004. It seems their numbers were added to Barros Blancos for the 2011 count.
