Bart's Early Life and Training
Bart Palaszewski was born in Warsaw, Poland. He lived there until he was 13 years old. Then, his family moved to Wonder Lake, Illinois, in the United States. When he was young, Bart's older cousin, who was into kickboxing, would often practice with him. Bart also started learning judo when he was in third grade.
After his judo coach became an Olympian, Bart wasn't happy with the new coach. So, he started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. This led him to discover mixed martial arts, or MMA. He trained hard while also working as a photographer and graphic designer. After seeing his first live MMA event, Bart knew he wanted to be a fighter. Even though his official record shows he lost his first four professional fights, he says he had other wins that weren't recorded. After those early losses, he bounced back with eight wins in a row!
Bart's Professional Fighting Career
Bart Palaszewski competed in several major mixed martial arts organizations.
Fighting in the WEC
Bart made his debut in the WEC against Alex Karalexis at WEC 37. He won this fight by TKO in the second round. This impressive win earned him the Knockout of the Night award.
After this win, Bart faced some tough opponents. He lost two fights in a row, first to Ricardo Lamas and then to Anthony Njokuani. The loss to Njokuani was the only time in his career he lost by TKO or knockout.
Bart then had a big fight against a rising star named Anthony Pettis at WEC 45. Bart surprised many people by winning this fight, giving Pettis his first professional loss. He continued his winning streak by defeating Karen Darabedyan with a submission in the first round at WEC 47. Bart also won his fight against Zach Micklewright at WEC 50 by TKO. His last fight in the WEC was against Kamal Shalorus at WEC 53, which he lost by a close decision.
Moving to the UFC
In October 2010, the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization joined with the UFC. Because of this, many WEC fighters, including Bart, moved to the UFC.
Bart was supposed to fight Cody McKenzie at UFC 130, but McKenzie got hurt. Then, Bart himself got injured and couldn't fight.
Bart finally made his UFC debut against Tyson Griffin at UFC 137. He won this fight with an amazing first-round knockout! He dropped Griffin with a powerful left hook and finished the fight with more punches. This exciting win earned him another Knockout of the Night award.
After this big win, Bart faced Hatsu Hioki at UFC 144 and lost by decision. He then fought Diego Nunes at UFC on FX 5. Bart lost this fight by decision, but it was such an exciting match that both fighters earned the "Fight of the Night" bonus!
Bart's last fight was against Cole Miller at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. He lost this fight by submission in the first round. After this, he was no longer part of the UFC. In February 2014, Bart Palaszewski announced that he was retiring from mixed martial arts.
