Bartolomé Bennassar (born April 8, 1929 – died November 8, 2018) was a French historian and writer. He was known for his deep knowledge of Spain and Latin America's past.

Who Was Bartolomé Bennassar?
Bartolomé Bennassar was a French historian who taught at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès. He was a "Professor Emeritus," which means he was a retired professor who still kept his title because of his important work. He focused on the history of Spain and Latin America, especially the 1500s and 1600s. He also had strong opinions about bullfighting.
His Work as a Historian
Bennassar started teaching history in 1952. He wrote many important books about Spanish history. These books helped people understand Spain's past better.
Books and Films
Some of his famous books include Le Voyage en Espagne (which means The Journey to Spain), L'Histoire des Espagnols (The History of the Spanish People), and La Guerre d'Espagne et ses lendemains (The Spanish Civil War and its Aftermath). He also wrote a very important book about Francisco Franco, a key leader in Spanish history.
One of his most famous books, Last Leap, was even made into a movie in 1970!
Recognitions and Awards
Bartolomé Bennassar received many awards for his historical work.
- In 1987, he was given the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise. This is a special award from Spain.
- He won the Prix-Eugène Colas in 1990.
- In 1991, he won the Prix xviie siècle for his book Les Chrétiens d'Allah.
- He received the Grand prix Gobert in 2005, which is a very important award for history in France.
- He also received an Honorary Degree from the University of Valladolid in Spain.
