Basketball at the 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's 3x3 qualification facts for kids
The men's 3x3 basketball tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics will have eight teams. These teams earned their spots between November 2022 and June 2024.
Three teams got their spots based on their high rankings in the FIBA 3x3 world standings. This included France, as they are the host country for the Olympics. The other five spots were given out through special "wildcard" tournaments. Two of these were called "Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournaments" (UOQTs), and one was the "FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament" (OQT).

How Teams Qualified
Eight teams will play in the men's 3x3 basketball tournament. Each country's team (called an NOC) will have three main players and one substitute player.
Host Country Spot
As the host country, France automatically got a spot in the men's 3x3 basketball tournament. This was confirmed by their ranking on November 1, 2023. If France hadn't been ranked high enough, then more teams would have qualified through the regular process.
Qualifying by World Rankings
Just like in the 2021 Olympics, the top three teams in the FIBA 3x3 men's basketball rankings on November 1, 2023, earned a spot in the Olympics. If France already had a spot as the host, then only two other teams would qualify this way. These rankings also helped decide which teams could enter the other qualifying tournaments (OQT and UOQT).
Qualifying Through Wildcard Tournaments
The last five spots were given to teams through three special wildcard tournaments. Even France could try to qualify this way if they hadn't already gotten a spot. Here's how these tournaments worked:
- UOQT 1: The top eight eligible teams from the FIBA world ranking list (including the host of this tournament) played here. The winner of this tournament earned a direct spot for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
- UOQT 2: The highest-ranked eligible team from each of the 2023 FIBA Continental Cups (from Asia and Oceania, Americas, Europe, and Africa) played in this tournament. The host country of the tournament and France (if they hadn't qualified yet) also played. The winner got a direct spot for Paris 2024. If there weren't enough teams from the Continental Cups, other high-ranked teams from the 2023 FIBA 3x3 World Cup could join.
- OQT: The sixteen highest-ranked eligible teams based on the FIBA global standings played in this tournament. This included the tournament host and France (if they hadn't qualified yet). The top three teams from this tournament earned the remaining spots for Paris 2024. The sixteen teams had to include at least two, but no more than ten, teams from the same continent.
