Bastetani facts for kids
The Bastetani were an ancient people who lived in the Iberian Peninsula a very long time ago. This was even before the Romans arrived! They were part of a larger group called the Iberians.
The Bastetani are thought to have spoken the Iberian language. We know about them from old writings and amazing things archaeologists have found.
Where the Bastetani Lived
The Bastetani lived in a region called Bastetania. This area was in the southeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Today, this land covers parts of southern Albacete, Almería, and Granada. It also included eastern Málaga, southeastern Jaén, and western Murcia.
Their most important towns were along the coast. These included places like Baria (which is now Villaricos) and Bailo (near Cádiz). Other key towns were Malaka (modern Málaga), Abdera, Sexi, and Carteia.
The main city, or capital, of the Bastetani was likely Basti. The Romans later gave it this name. Today, this ancient city is known as Baza.
The Lady of Baza
One of the most famous discoveries from the Bastetani people is the Lady of Baza. This incredible sculpture is of a woman sitting on a throne. It was found in 1971 in a burial ground (necropolis) near Basti. The Lady of Baza helps us learn a lot about their art and culture.
